A REVIEW ON THE APPLICATION OF ALGINATE IN VARIOUS INDUSTRIES

Abstract

Alginic acid, also called algin or alginate, is an anionic polysaccharide distributed widely in the cell walls of brown algae, where it, through binding water, forms a viscous gum. In extracted form it absorbs water quickly; it is capable of absorbing 200-300 times its own weight in water.[1] Its colour ranges from white to yellowish-brown. It is sold in filamentous, granular or powdered forms. It is a linear copolymer with homopolymeric blocks of (1-4)-linked β-D-mannuronate (M) and its C-5 epimer α-L-guluronate (G) residues, respectively, covalently linked together in different sequences or blocks. The monomers can appear in homopolymeric blocks of consecutive G-residues (G-blocks), consecutive M-residues (M-blocks) or alternating M and G-residues (MG-blocks). Alginate is used extensively as an impression-making material in dentistry, prosthetics, life casting and occasionally for creating positives for small-scale casting. It is also used in the food industry, for thickening soups and jellies. In this paper, explains about the applications of alginates in different industries.

ASSESSMENT OF NUTRITIONAL AND SENSORY QUALITY OF RECIPES INCORPORATED WITH THYME POWDER

Abstract

An aromatic herb in the mint family, Thyme leaf grows to a height of fifteen inches with small rounded leaves and pink flowers on woody stems. It is also a good source of iron, phosphorous, potassium, zinc and manganese. Thyme leaves are collected from Kodaikanal hill area. The collected fresh Thyme leaves are washed and remove the immature part. After that the leaves are Shadow dried at 27-37 C and the leaves are made in to powder by using mixture grinder.   In order to estimate the micro and macro nutrients such as carbohydrate, protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, iron and crude fibre of thyme powder. It was found to be rich in iron, phosphorous, small amount of carbohydrate and moderate amount of fat content present in thyme powder.  In order to estimate the phytonutrients such as beta carotene, phenol and polyphenol are estimated by quantitative method. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts against various micro organisms were tested by using disc diffusion method. The ethanol extract showed the better result. Whereas, the strong antibacterial inhibition was noted in methanol extracts of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The sensory evaluation was done by a panel of twenty expert using A 5 point hedonic scale. Five recipes were prepared with and without incorporation of the developed thyme leaf powder. Thyme leaf powder was incorporated in 2%,4%,6% level in tea,noodles,pacoda, channa masala and chillie chicken. Only 2% and 4% thyme leaf powder incorporate recipes were acceptable because increasing the amount of up to 1% brought considerable changes in taste of recipes. This result of study encourages the incorporation of this locally available ingredients pumpkin seed in various indigenous products which might be helpful for promoting health

SEAWEEDS USED AS A SOURCE OF ALGINATE IN TEXTILE INDUSTRY

Abstract

Alginates are cell-wall constituents of brown algae (Phaeophyceae). They are chain-forming heteropolysaccharides made up of blocks of mannuronic acid and guluronic acid (picture left shows high manuronic acid gel, standard gel and high guluronic gel, giving different consistencies). Composition of the blocks depends on the species being used for extraction and the part of the thallus from which extraction is made. Calcium alginate is insoluble in water and this led to the development of fibres that could be woven into various textiles or parts of textiles, and their use in bandages, particularly for large wounds and burns, became widespread. The bandage could be removed much more easily than cellulose-based bandages, as the calcium alginate was soluble in a simple salt solution, and wound disruption was reduced. Modifications of the same principle also allows these fibres to form an important part of firemen’s fire-proof clothing and as part of the fluxes now used in welding rods. . Good quality stable fibers have been produced from mixed salts of sodium and calcium alginate, and processed into non-woven fabric that is used in wound dressings. They have very good wound healing and haemostatic properties and can be absorbed by body fluids because the calcium in the fibre is exchanged for sodium from the body fluid to give a soluble sodium alginate. This also makes it easy to remove these dressings from large open wounds or burns since they do not adhere to the wound.

METACOGNITIVE STRATEGIES FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM-SOLVING

Abstract

            The purpose of this paper is to identify the metacognitive strategies for the enhancement of mathematical problem solving. This paper portrays the results by historical method. The primary purpose of the enhancement of mathematical problem solving instruction is not to equip students with a collection of skills and processes, but rather to enable them to think for themselves. The value of skills and processes instruction should be judged by the extent to which the skills and processes actually enhance flexible, independent thinking. Students’ abilities to think flexibly can be developed and enhanced by teachers modeling their own thinking processes, giving students opportunities to solve the problem, and helping students become aware of their own thought processes as they solve mathematical problems. This process of analyzing our own thought processes is called metacognition and includes thinking about how we are approaching a problem, the strategies we choose to use to find a solution, and the questions we ask ourselves about the problem are all part of metacognition.

A STUDY ON OVER ALL ACCEPTABILITY OF BRASSICA OLERACEA LEAVES (CAULIFLOWER LEAVES) INCORPORATED FOOD PRODUCTS AND ITS IMPACT ON TREATING ANEMIC COLLEGE GOING GIRLS

                                                           Abstract

     Brassica oleracea leaves is found to adequate quantity of iron and vitamin C. Thus the investigator was motivated to incorporate the dried form of this Brassica oleracea leaves powder in the common recipes to increase the nutrients and to treat anemic college going girls. The collected fresh Brassica oleracea leaves were washed and remove and the immature part after that the leaves are shadow dried at 27-37O C and the leaves were made in to powder. In order to estimated the nutrient analysis by using AOAC procedure Brassica oleracea leaves was found have high Vitamin C – 54.27 mg/100gm, Beta Carotene – 42.58 mg/100gm, Iron – 60.78 mg/100gm. The sensory evaluation was done by trained panelists (n = 20) were recruited from staff  of the TBAK college for  women, using a five-point hedonic scale .Three recipes were prepared with and without incorporation of the developed Brassica oleracea leaves powder. The powder was incorporated in 5%,10%,15% level in chocolate, cookies and green gram ball. Only 5% Brassica oleracea leaves powder incorporate recipes were highly acceptable the recipes that had highest overall acceptability were selected for supplementation. The total of 6 anemic adolescent girls in age group 17-18 years were further classified as severe anemic, moderate anemic and mild anemic their hemoglobin level and iron binding capacity were analyzed initially. After the supplementation period of 60 days their final hemoglobin and iron binding were analyzed.  Hb levels of the selected samples were in the range of 7.4 to 10.3.Iron binding capacity levels of the selected samples were in the range of 228 mg/dl to 380 mg/dl .There is a significant difference between initial & finial level on supplementation with 5 % Brassica oleracea leaves incorporated Cookies & Chocolate.

POLYANILINE NANOFIBERS AND THEIR APPLICATION

Abstract

Poly aniline is the oldest and potentially one of the most useful conducting polymer because of its facile synthesis, environmental stability and simple acid or base doping chemistry. Because Nano form of this polymer could offer new properties or enhanced performance, nanostructure poly aniline has attracted a great deal of interest during the past few years. Poly aniline is a conducting polymer which has been used for decades, however only within the past few years has it become a process able material with the development of poly aniline Nano fibers and dispersions. The Nano fibrillar morphology allows one to use poly aniline easily. The process ability and high surface area allow efficient use in applications such as sensors, artificial muscles, metal nanoparticle scaffolds, bistable memory devices, electro chromic, water purification, capacitors and many other areas. Improved control of the synthesis of poly aniline, its derivatives, and other conducting polymers promise an even greater enhancement of the application range for these lightweight and inexpensive materials. This account summarizes our recent research on the synthesis, processing, properties and applications of poly aniline Nano fibers.

REPELLENCY OF THREE EXTRACT OF THREE INDIGENOUS PLANTS AGAINST ADULTS OF Tribolium castaneum HERBST (COLEOPTERA: TENEBRIONIDAE)

Abstract

The present investigation was aimed to assess the impact of crude extracts of certain plants such as Ocimum sanctum, Cardiospermum halicacabum, Mentha longifolia was tested for their repellant activity against Tribolium castaneum in the laboratory condition. Among the extracts tested the ethanol extracts showed remarkable repellent activities than hexane and ethyl acetate at 200µg/ml.  The finding of the present study indicates that the possible role of utilization of plant and plant associated products to control the coleopteran beetle T. castaneum as an alternate strategy to the chemical pesticides.

EFFECT OF CaCl2 ON GROWTH AND COMPATIBLE SOLUTES OF Zea mays UNDER NaCl STRESS

                                                   Abstract

In the present work an attempt was made to reclamation the sodium chloride stressed plant with calcium chloride. For this work, Zea mays var. – co – 24 was cultivated in control, NaCl alone, and in combined salt (NaCl + CaCl2). From the present study it is observed that Zea mays could survive up to 40mM NaCl alone and combined salt (40mM NaCl +5mM CaCl2); However, the favorable growth responses were confined to combined salt (10mM NaCl +5mM CaCl2). NaCl treatment decreased the growth parameters such as percentage of seed germination, shoot and root length, number of leaves, fresh and dry weight of leaf, stem and root of Zea mays as compared with control plants. However the supplemental calcium chloride increase the growth parameter as compared to plants stressed with NaCl.

Abstract.

The present study is about a critical analysis of the influence of personal and demographic variables on teacher educator’s attitude towards the existing teacher education programme. The sample of the study comprised of 20 TTI s and 120 teacher educators in and around of the Puducherry Region. For knowing the attitude of teacher educators an attitude scale was developed by the investigator. For achieving the objectives of the study a two stage stratified random sampling technique was used. Further, they found that there is little correlation between theoretical and practical aspects of training.

IMPACT OF TANNERY EFFLUENT ON BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF Brasssica juncea

Abstract

            The tannery effluent is a mixture of biogenic matter of hides and a large variety of organic and inorganic chemicals. It usually contains high concentration of toxic metals like copper, chromium, zinc, cadmium, nickel and chemicals like aliphatic sulfonates and cyanides. The use of plants for bioremediation is called as phytoremediation. It involves the use of green plants to decontaminate soil, water and air. It is a cost effective process and the end products are nonhazardous. In the present study a hyper accumulating plant Brassica juncea was grown in different concentrations of effluent and their biochemical parameters carotenoid, chlorophyll, chromium, nickel and zinc were analyzed in leaves, stem and seeds. The results show that the heavy metal contents were higher in stem compared to leaves indicating the transports of these are high in stem. Chlorophyll and carotenoid contents  of  plants treated with  25 per cent  effluent was higher compared to  50 per cent effluent treated plants. Higher the dilution lesser the harmful effect of effluent on the plants.
